Senate Overrides Perdue's Offshore Energy Veto
The Republican-led state Senate is making clear it wants Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue to enter an agreement with other governors to lobby the federal government for offshore energy exploration, although she said the Legislature can't make her do it.
The Senate voted Wednesday to override Perdue's veto of what's called the "Energy Jobs Act," which also reworks a state energy panel to focus more upon oil and natural gas exploration. The bill would become law if the House also agrees to override by a three-fifths majority.
Perdue says a provision requiring her to enter a compact with South Carolina and Virginia's governors to develop an offshore strategy is unconstitutional.
Environmentalists oppose the bill because they say it would discourage green energy alternatives.
