NC Salvation Army Bell Ringer Tries To Stop Thief

A bell ringer for The Salvation Army of Davidson County says she tried to stop a shoplifter outside a Big Lots.

The Dispatch of Lexington reports that 26-year-old Holly Rouse was manning a kettle Thursday morning when she noticed a man who didn't go through checkout putting items in his back pocket. She says when she told him to go back inside and pay, he pushed her.

She says she tackled him, but he got away, though she took down the license plate number of the vehicle he got into.

Salvation Army corps administrator Les Ashby praises Rouse's efforts. He says Big Lots wants her outside the store for the rest of the season.

But he advised other bell ringers to just report crimes to store managers.

He couldn't have been too desperate. He had enough gas to get there and leave. Tough criminal though. The big bad gangster shoved a girl bell ringer that was apparently more of a man then him. She should have clocked him with her bell. Good job girl.

But he advised other bell ringers to just carry a weapon. (but this would be against policy, I'm sure)
