NC House, Senate Delays Actions After Storms

The North Carolina General Assembly is scaling back the start of its work week so legislators can remain in their storm-ravaged districts if they choose for one more day.

House and Senate Republicans announced there will be no recorded votes Monday during evening floor sessions. A House Insurance Committee meeting also was canceled. Each chamber had scheduled a full floor calendar.

Weekend tornadoes led to at least 21 deaths in several Piedmont and eastern counties. Several hundred homes have been either damaged or destroyed.

The lawmakers are supposed to return to regular schedules Tuesday morning.

The delays come as GOP lawmakers are involved in high-stakes veto fights with Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue over unemployment benefits and the state employee health insurance plan.
