NC Gets $2-Million In Post-Irene Funding For Temporary Workers

The federal government has committed up to $2 million for temporary jobs to help North Carolina recover from Hurricane Irene.

The Department of Labor announced Monday that the emergency grant funding will be used to create 200 temporary jobs for workers dislocated by the storm.

The jobs will help with cleanup, repair, renovation and reconstruction projects. Some of the money will also go toward humanitarian aid and safety assistance.

About $750,000 will be released to the state immediately, with the rest available if North Carolina demonstrates a need for it.

Initial estimates have more than 1,100 homes in North Carolina destroyed by the Category 1 storm, which also did hundreds of millions of dollars of damage.
