NC Asks Judge To Toss Lawsuit On Bonner Bridge

The state Department of Transportation is asking a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit over the current plan to replace the deteriorating bridge connecting Hatteras Island to the rest of North Carolina's Outer Banks.

The state filed its response Wednesday, asking the court to throw out the complaint by groups represented by the Southern Environmental Law Center.

The response says the lawsuit's claims are baseless.

The Bonner Bridge was built in 1963 and was designed to last 30 years. The state is moving forward with plans for a replacement that goes through the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge.

Environmentalists support a 17-mile alternative that would bypass the refuge.

DOT officials say construction work could start late next year, with the bridge opening in 2015.

damn all the yankee transplants coming down here and trying to change the way of life we love and enjoy. Starting all these groups trying to save a dag bird or a sea turtle is not their adgenda. They want the beaches all to themselves, and dont want to be bothered by some local driving on the beach in front of their half a million dollar home, messing up "THEIR" beach. Repair the bridge, and everyone that doesn't like the solution go back up north and leave us the heck alone.

Can a citizen sue Southern Environmental Law Center if the bridge collapse and kills people? What about the home owners on Hatteras Island if they can't access there homes?

Chuck, you seem confused. The Tea Party is a conservative movement to get the fed's fingers out of stuff like this that should be handled by local government. The libs are the ones who are typically the radical tree huggers.

I hesitate to use the word loon as it is a magnificent bird species but when will the Figurative LOONs be contained and stop the waste of tax dollars? Next they will want to ban antibiotics because drugs hurt bacteria.

I think if the environmental group wants the new 17 miles of new bridge OK, as long as they fund the difference with their donations. I have no problem. If they want us as taxpayers to bend over for saving the black diving minnow or oyster beds, good luck with that.
