The North Carolina Department of Transportation is warning ferry users that suspensions or delays could be in store the next several weeks.
Travelers using the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry could encounter delays or suspensions due to extreme shoaling of the Hatteras Inlet Channel. The arrival of Tuesday's cold front could create safety issues due to wind- driven tides.
Because of the shoaling issue, the ferry division is running only Hatteras' smaller class boats.
