NAACP "Forward Together" Tour Stops In Greenville

NAACP leaders all across the state are spreading the word about what they say is a "high-jacked" general assembly.

The Forward Together movement stopped in Greenville Thursday as it continues to tour the state, mobilizing local communities to fight back against the state government. They say 158 North Carolinians were arrested during four weeks of "Moral Monday" demonstrations in Raleigh. Some of the senate and house votes the group disagrees with include medicaid and voter ID Requirements. They say poor people are being specifically targeted.

"We need more, not less, when you have people who are hungry. When we close all the doors and we demonize them for needing food stamps... we need more food stamps for hungry people," said NAACP N.C. Representative Rev. Curtis E. Gatewood

The Forward Together movement is scheduled to make 17 more stops across the state between Friday May 31st and Friday June 7th.

RALEIGH (AP) -- The North Carolina chapter of the NAACP is launching a 25-county tour targeting the policies of the Republican-led General Assembly.

The civil rights group heads Tuesday to Wake, Wilson, Nash and Edgecombe counties for public events featuring legal and policy experts, grassroots organizers and people arrested during weekly protests at the state legislature.

The state chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will also release a mid-session report card assessing each legislator's votes for their effects on behalf of the state's poorer residents.

The NAACP has criticized Republican action on economic policy, social programs, education and voting rights. More than 150 people have been arrested in the group's protests at the General Assembly.

The next demonstration in the group's Monday series comes June 3.
