Inmates in one local county may be picking up trash from the street soon.
Lenoir County Sheriff Chris Hill said the county will soon start seeing low risk, volunteer inmates picking up trash in the highway medians.
Sheriff Hill said an inmate work plan was in discussion for weeks, and a plan to have a crew has finally been made.
Sheriff Hill also said equipment for the inmate cleanup program has already started being purchased using drug dealer money and the program will probably only be for the summer.
Once the major highways are cleaned, the inmates will move on to other roads in need of attention.
