Man Found Guilty In UNC Student Body President Murder

A jury has found Laurence Lovette guilty in the murder of Eve Carson.

The jury considering the fate of a man accused of killing the student body president at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has gone home after its first day of deliberations.

After 90 minutes of talks and one question, the jury in the trial of Laurence Lovette went home shortly after 5 p.m. Monday without reaching a verdict. The panel will return to resume deliberations Tuesday morning.

In closing arguments, Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall said that the evidence clearly shows Lovette robbed, kidnapped and shot Eve Carson on March 5, 2008.

Defense lawyers said the state's key witnesses had reasons to lie and suggested a DNA swab linking Lovette to Carson's SUV had been mishandled.
