Hurricane Irene One Month Later

Tuesday marks one month since Hurricane Irene hit Eastern Carolina and many people are still recovering.

So far, the Federal Emergency Management Agency says nearly 27,000 people have applied for assistance like referrals, temporary housing, repairs to damaged homes, disaster-related medical expenses and personal items destroyed or lost in the storm. 6,640 of those applications came from North Carolina residents.

FEMA has granted $75.8 million so far nationwide. The organization has awarded $19.6 million to individuals and municipalities in 37 North Carolina counties.

Assistance is still available by calling 1-800-621-FEMA or by going online at disasterassistance.gov.

Still have piles of branches and other refuse in front of a lot of houses here. A pick up crew was working on it the first few weeks after the storm, but I've not seen any other activity since. Did the city run out of money? If you have a legitimate claim and your insurance company isn't promptly processing it, be sure to post who that company is so we know better than to use them in the future.

A tree fell on the power lines to the house but thankfully did not sever the wires from the house. After all this time, STILL no one has come out to check on the damage that was done to the house from the wires being pulled taut.

Are you renting? If so, check with your landlord, its their house/their responsiblity. If you own, who have you called? Has the tree been removed from the power lines?
