Tuesday marks one month since Hurricane Irene hit Eastern Carolina and many people are still recovering.
So far, the Federal Emergency Management Agency says nearly 27,000 people have applied for assistance like referrals, temporary housing, repairs to damaged homes, disaster-related medical expenses and personal items destroyed or lost in the storm. 6,640 of those applications came from North Carolina residents.
FEMA has granted $75.8 million so far nationwide. The organization has awarded $19.6 million to individuals and municipalities in 37 North Carolina counties.
