There are people who don't want to leave or can't leave their homes. So now they're doing everything they can to protect it.
88-year-old Stacy Mann and his family started boarding up his home on Cape Hatteras in Dare County, where the eye of Irene could make landfall. The family says it took them several hours to nail in plywood over the windows and move valuables to higher ground. Mann says it's not the wind he's worried about .
"Water is the main downfall of all. If water loosens everything up and ruins your cars and whatever you got tied up you got to drain it especially motors of any kind." said Mann.
