RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- For a few thousand drivers in North Carolina, Halloween brought something more than just tricks or treats.

State Transportation Secretary Gene Conti says state and local police handed out nearly 21,000 traffic and criminal citations during the four-day "Booze It and Lose It" campaign that ran from Oct. 28 through Halloween.

Police conducted dedicated patrols and stepped up sobriety checkpoints during the campaign. More than 750 people were cited for driving while impaired. Police logged over 5,700 speeding tickets and handed out over 1,100 seat belt violations.

Counties with the highest number of DWI citations were Mecklenburg, Wake, Robeson and Guilford.
