Greenpeace Protesting At Progress Energy Plant

Some Greenpeace protesters have climbed a smokestack that towers over a power plant near Asheville.

Progress Energy spokesman Scott Sutton says a handful of protesters scaled the column at the Asheville Power Plant in Arden on Monday morning.

Sutton says the utility's highest priority is to safely remove the protesters and protect the 400-megawatt plant that serves Progress customers in western North Carolina.

Greenpeace spokeswoman Keiller MacDuff says activists have secured themselves to devices including the coal loader and conveyer belts. She says the group thinks plants like the one in Asheville that use coal damage the environment.

Sutton says the group has also hung banners around the facility. He says police are working to remove the protesters.

So....when the towns' power goes out, they'll know who to blame, eh?

I realize that these people snuck in somehow but still, I thought after 9/11 that power plants had security in place.

I agree; scary ain't it, how easy it is to sneak up on us cell phone/PC-using Americans. Even our local hospital has TV surveillance cameras and a technician sitting in front of the monitors, complete with codes and phone system to alert campus police of unusual activity.

Simple fix, crank up the burners and heat up the smoke stack.

Rapid cure: sniper them off. Humorous cure: go up to within about ten feet of them, and climb down slowly, cutting off the rungs as you go...

Keep is simple, just shut down the power in Ashville. Yep, see how long it takes the locals to clear the stack of children. Oh, do it for the children, old people and the whales.

I say let them stay up there as long as they like. Put a few leg traps at the bottom of the ladder and wait. I gurantee you the will eventually get hungry and come down. Then they will be very easy to apprehend and take to the loony bin.

What a bunch of morons! These same idiots will protest against Nuclear Energy, so what's their answer should we just abandon electricity altogether and go back 100 years in our lifestyle? They're breaking and entering, they're risking their lives by doing something as dumb as climbing the tower and causing police, rescue, fire and other valuable resources to be used at taxpayers expense to rescue and remove them. What happened to making a sign saying you don't like what the company is doing and just marching around outside the entrance to the plant? My goodness, get a life you morons!
