Governor Perdue Wants $30-Million From Lawmakers For Pre-K In 2012

Gov. Beverly Perdue is asking state legislators to find another $30 million she says is required by a judge's order to provide pre-kindergarten education to all at-risk 4-year-olds.

Perdue's office said Monday she was asking the General Assembly for the money to enroll another 6,300 children in North Carolina Pre-Kindergarten starting in January.

A Superior Court judge ensuring that state officials obey the North Carolina constitution's requirement to provide all children a good, basic education ruled in July that no eligible 4-year-old could be denied a place in the program.

The state budget approved this summer over Perdue's veto cut funding for pre-kindergarten education by $32 million while requiring that the high standards be maintained and that most parents co-pay for the services.
