Governor Perdue: Four Deaths From Irene, Tropical Storm Winds Until Early Sunday

Governor Beverly Perdue says four people have died in NC as a result of Hurricane Irene.

During her briefing at 6:00 p.m. the governor said at the height of the storm around 500,000 customers were without power.

Perdue says a major power transmission line is down in Tarboro causing a lot of the outages.

The governor says there were at least three confirmed tornadoes.

Sixty shelters remain open across the state with 5,540 people in those shelters.

The governor says 414 National Guardsmen have been activated and that seven helicopters are available...40 more if needed.

The governor says she expects tropical storm winds until 2:00 or 3:00 a.m. Sunday.
