Former Longtime Tryon Palace Director Dies

A woman known for her love of history and commitment to the Tryon Palace in New Bern has died.

Kay Williams, 69-years-old of New Bern, died Sunday. Williams was the director of the Tryon Palace for 30 years until she retired last month.

According to her obituary, she died at her home after being diagnosed in July with esophageal cancer.

She is also recognized for organizing the campaign to raise $60 million dollars to build the history center in New Bern.

Keith McClease worked with Williams all her 30-years at the palace and says she will be greatly missed. "Bringing people together was the greatest thing she did. Being able to bring communities together, black and white, being able to establish a place for people to come to and sit at a table and talk about history and be able to get to know what its all about."

Williams funeral will be held Wednesday at 3:30 at New Bern Memorial Cemetery and a reception will follow at 5:30 to honor her at the history center in New Bern.
