Firefighters Gaining Ground On Pender Co. Fire

Firefighters say a blaze that has burned nearly 50 square miles in northeastern Pender County is now two-thirds under control.

The StarNews of Wilmington reported Friday that rains have recently slowed the fire's growth, giving firefighters the chance to plow ditches around the perimeter to contain it.

But officials say the fire still could expand.

Firefighters say organic soil along the south section of the land is particularly at risk and fallen trees could bridge containment line, allowing flames to spread.

The fire has burned since lightning struck June 19.
