Fill 'Er Up Now: Gas Tax About To Increase In NC

One tax that nearly everyone in North Carolina pays will fall next week. But another one is going up.

The state gasoline excise tax will automatically rise by 2.5 cents per gallon to a record 35 cents on July 1.

That tax is going up even as the Republican-led legislature let a temporary penny increase on the sales tax expire.

Republicans said they couldn't agree on a way to cap the gas tax and make up lost funds for road-building projects.

Democrats controlling the legislature earlier had capped the gas tax for three years ending in mid-2009. The state lost nearly a half-billion dollars it would have collected had the tax been allowed to increase.

Increasing the gasoline tax now is a really dumb move. And I thought republicans didn't like tax increases. Re: Afghanistant. We have accomplished nothing, except to waste a lot of lives and money. When we leave, Afghanistan will return to its usual corrupt, lawless natural state. WE JUST NEED TO GET OUT OF THE MIDDLE EAST!

Obama ordered the release of 30 million barrels on Thursday. Whow! That covers only about 2 days. Man he is trying to get the Dem Lib Media to spin anything now to fool the American people. Goggle the facts please! Currently, the United States consumes 19.6 million barrels per day, of oil, which is more than 25% of the world's total. The U.S. uses about 6.6 billion barrels per year. Obama's 30 Billion Barrels is a Media joke. Obama spent 800 Billion on jobs. The unemployment numbers came out Thursday were so bad it sent the stock market in a free fall. Wake up Americans. How is Obama going to spin us today?

This is a crock of bull, when gas prices are as high as it today, why pull more money out of our pockets to help our state which can not get it's budget right is a crock

The higher the gas taxes go, the less we'll waste, and the sooner we will end our addiction to and dependence on foreign oil. I say we should tax each gallon an additional 3 or 4 dollars per gallon and use those funds to build an infrastructure so that we can reclaim our self reliance and independence.

Great idea. Of course since food prices will go up just as much you could look at a loaf of bread costing $7.50 and a gallon of milk $12.00. Well thought out point of view you have there.

I am guessing the poster has already got and electric car, windmill and solar panels on their house, otherwise, it was mere hypocracy showing its ugly head as usual. We will never be self reliant until we drill and pump our own oil, the rest is lip service for a poor presidential performance.

The oil reserves amounts to about 2 day supply. I sincerly doubt it will cause a panic trade in oil futures. Obama has no plan for the economy whatsoever except tax you hope and change morons to death. Want your vote back yet? lol

I like the idea of Barack Obama as President a little less now than I did in November 2008 (however, I'm not sure McCain would have done better -- recall that he said that Bush was doing fine, which is a big part of why my vote went to the other guy) but I do not understand how Obama's policies affect North Carolina's tax laws. For anybody who is confused, they do not. This is a state tax. The federal government (including President Obama) has nothing to do with it. The highest official you can blame is Governor Beverly Perdue, who is also a Democrat, thereby satisfying your anti-Democratic rallying cries. Side note: I wonder if President Franklin Delano Roosevelt faced the opposition Obama faces today when he brought us back from the Great Depression. By the way, it took him over 10 years plus World War II to get it done. Obama hasn't had 3 years. Food for thought.

Eric, its simple, the feds imposed new green jobs for EPA and other agencies that the state has to pay for. This is why the budget is way out there. Remember that money that Bev took from them? It came with a price tag.

FDR did many things that kept the depression going, same as Obama has done. To be fair, Bush's 700 billion stimulus was a bad deal too. If the govment had done nothing, we would be well on the road to recovery, but this huge debt cannot go away without manufacturing. That, and that alone, is why WWII killed the depression.

The ID plan was a easy way the the gOp could prevent old and poor people from voting. How about working on something like finding a solution to the illegals? Oh that too hard. ok.

The reason the gas tax is so high is that the state maintains more roads than any other state except Texas. In most other states, local roads are maintained by the counties, who have to come up with the money (taxes) to maintain those roads. Here, we pay a high gas tax to the state instead of some other county tax. And, I agree, our back roads, maintained by the state, are in much better shape than in most states. None of which excuses the government raiding the transportation funds, and I think the tax increase stinks.
