Feds To Inspect NC Nuclear Plant After Incident

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says it plans to conduct a special inspection of Progress Energy's Brunswick nuclear plant near Wilmington following an incident in which boiling water flowed out of an improperly sealed reactor chamber.

The News & Observer reports that the inspectors will visit the twin-reactor plant next week to review the highly unusual incident that was discovered Wednesday and led to Unit 2's shutdown.

NRC officials said in a news release Friday that the incident posed no safety risk to employees or the public but added that the event "raises important questions that need to be addressed." The radioactive water that spilled out collected in a drain for normal processing.

The agency says it plans to issue a report within 45 days of the on-site inspection, which will take several days.
