Feds Seek Option For Dredge Sand Along NC Beaches

Beach communities and environmentalists are pushing back against a proposal to give the National Park Service the option of using sand to fight erosion on North Carolina's pristine Shackleford Banks.

Park Service officials say they need the option of taking sand from Beaufort Inlet, which is expanding, and move it to the eroding barrier island over the next 20 years.

But beach communities like Atlantic Beach say they need all the sand for their own shores. And some environmentalists say Shackleford Banks should be left alone.

The Army Corps of Engineers plans to approve a final plan in spring of 2015.
