Fake Bell Ringer Arrested in Hoke County

RAEFORD, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say a woman with a red apron, bell and a gift-wrapped cardboard box impersonated a Salvation Army bell ringer in Raeford and kept the donations for herself.

Police say 51-year-old Annie King went door-to-door asking for donations at downtown businesses Thursday before she was arrested in front of a Family Dollar store.

Authorities say she collected about $20 before she was taken into custody and charged with obtaining property by false pretense.

Investigators say King was a Salvation Army bell ringer in Tennessee and was using her old apron and bell.

Police say King was released on bail, but missed a court appearance Friday. It wasn't known if she had an attorney.
