Durham Brothers Sentenced In New Bern For Housing Illegal Workers

Two North Carolina brothers who profited by having illegal immigrant workers from their native Mexico smuggled in to work in their construction company for below minimum wage will spend years in prison.

Federal prosecutors said Thursday the brothers owned J&A Framers Carpentry, which during the housing boom heavily employed illegal immigrants among its more than 70 workers.

A federal judge in New Bern sentenced the naturalized U.S. citizens from Durham, who pleaded guilty to conspiring to harbor illegal aliens.

Juan Antonio Lopez-Ponce was sentenced to 37 months in prison. Jose Alfredo Lopez-Ponce will serve 26 months.

Prosecutors say the brothers paid smuggling rings to get illegal Mexican workers into the U.S., underpaid them, charged them rent to live in housing the brothers owned, and falsified income tax records.

I thought the arguement was that Mexicans are here taking jobs that Americans will not do. It appears Mexicans are the ones who now own businesses and compete with other businesses by using slave labor. Way to go America.

Instead of sending those scumbags to jail, go ahead and deport them to Mexico and let the Mexican officials handle them.

Sounds like a good idea, but they'll be back over the border in no time at all, doing the same thing over again. The Mexican Goverment won't do anything with them but let them loose.

All of you commentators are racist. These individuals were exploiting humans, should they have been here illegally, probably not, but the Obama administration isn't doing anything about it, anyway. Illegal immigrants are exploited everyday by business owners it doesn't matter if the business owner is Mexican, White or Black no one in America should have to work for less than minimum wage. no one in this country should be a slave under any circumstances, we are supposed to be the better nation.

If the brothers are US citizens, they will not be deported. They are "business men",small business men at that who create most of the jobs in this country and whom the Republicans are always wanting to help by reducing taxes, eliminating red-tape and regulations , etc, etc, etc. Go ahead Repubs and eliminate some more of those onerous regulations.

If the Republicans did not want people stealing our jobs then they would vote YES on the legislation that takes away incentivef for moving jobs overseas. Did they vote YES? NO because they are incapable of saying anything but NO. NO matter what.

That's bull boatload and has nothing to do with the story. The truth is that obama and his cronies WILL NOT SECURE THE BOARDER. They think it is secure and safe (no help by eric holder and his Fast and Furious program.) If the head of homeland security would get her head out of the sand, she could stop this, but she is a puppet of obama, the illegals best friend forever.

Since the heighth of the housing boom happened while George W was president , I don't expect you fact challanged Republicans to accept that at least a few illeagles were entering the country while the Repubs were in charge of protecting the border.
