Deputies Charge 15-Year-Old Friend In Lenoir County Shooting

Deputies have charged a 15-year-old Lenoir County teen with voluntary manslaughter after his friend was shot to death Wednesday afternoon.

Ricky Nava, a junior at South Lenoir High School, was killed after deputies say a friend shot him. Because of his age, the name of the 15-year-old is not being release. He has been taken to a secure juvenile holding facility in Greenville.

Deputies say preliminary findings show Nava walked over to the home of his friend, and at one point the 15 year old was handling his father's 12 gauge shotgun. Witnesses say the teen was pointing the gun at his friends, but there was no indication of an argument or disagreement. Deputies say the teen reportedly racked the shotgun, pointed it at the victim and pulled the trigger.

The 15 year old is scheduled to have a hearing Monday in Lenoir County District Court.

Seriously???!! Why place this on the parents? This kid was one year from being able to drive a car and he was too stupid to know that if you point a gun at someone and pull the trigger you can kill them?

Prayers going out to both families. Ricky was such a sweet guy and always friendly. I don't know the whole story but if in fact it was an accident, this teen should have been taught a long time ago not to play with guns. Such a sad tragedy that didn't have to happen if the parents had just locked up the ammo.

Who says he wasn't taught... a 15 year old should know better and the parent shouldn't have to lock up Ammo from a 15 year old... I am all about gun safety and the ammo in our house is locked because I have small kids but a 15 year old needs to take responsibility.
