Deadline Nears For Irene Flood Insurance Claims

The deadline is looming for Hurricane Irene-related flood insurance claims in North Carolina.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency says Wednesday is the last day that people with a policy under the National Flood Insurance Program can file a claim, known as a proof of loss.

Normally, insurance companies need to receive the proof of loss within 60 days of the event that caused the damage, but in this case the deadline was extended. FEMA officials say the signed and sworn proof of loss should be in the office of insurance carriers by Wednesday, rather than dropped in the mail.

At the time the Category 1 storm struck, there were 114,000 National Flood Insurance Program policies in effect in the 38 counties of North Carolina later given federal disaster status.
