Dan Forest Kicks Off "Barnstorm Tour" For NC Lt. Governor Race

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- One of two Republicans who have been running for months to become North Carolina's next lieutenant governor says he's officially kicked off his campaign tour.

Raleigh architect Dan Forest began Monday what he called a statewide barnstorm tour, first with visits to Alamance, Chatham, Forsyth and Randolph counties. He plans to cover about 30 counties in 10 days.

Forest is the son of U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick. Her former chief of staff is Forest's campaign manager.

Wake County commissioner and pharmacist Tony Gurley is also running for the Republican nomination.

Democratic Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton is seeking a second four-year term.

The lieutenant governor presides over the North Carolina Senate, serves on the state Board of Education and Board of Community Colleges and receives other responsibilities from the governor.
