Starting Tuesday Department of Transportation crews are bringing in sandbags and wire baskets filled with rocks to prevent sand around the base of Bonner Bridge from washing away as repair work starts. That bridge carries N.C. highway 12 over the Oregon Inlet and connects Hatteras Island to the mainland. The idea is to fortify the bridge against the sand erosion that commonly occurs in the inlet. There will be periodic lane closures during the work and it's expected to wrap up December 1st.
