WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) -- Electrical and mechanical repairs to the Wrightsville Beach drawbridge will limit traffic to and from the island for six months.
The StarNews of Wilmington reports the first of the four-lane shutdowns will start next Wednesday and continue through next March. The state Department of Transportation said police will be stationed on either side of the bridge and only emergency vehicles will be allowed to cross the bridge between 11:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. during the project.
DOT resident engineer Kerry Cross said the 12 bridge closures will never occur on a Friday or Saturday.
During the day, two lanes will remain open to accommodate eastbound and westbound traffic. Cross said this traffic pattern will be used on nights the contractor is not working.
