Could Area Beaches Ban Smoking?

A proposed ban on smoking at Wrightsville Beach has some wondering if officials in Eastern Carolina could consider the same thing for beaches here.

Wrightsville Beach officials voted on that proposed ban Thursday night and rejected it by a vote of 3-2.

Emerald Isle Town Manager Frank Rush says, "A smoking ban on beaches is not something the board of commissioners has considered in the past and it's nothing we've contemplated at the staff level."

Atlantic Beach Police Major Jeff Harvey says enforcement would be a challenge. "Particularly here, we have five miles of beach front. So at any given time we have a handful of officers that are primarily tied up with the road."

While smoking bans aren't something beach goers will have to worry about along the Crystal Coast, parking fees are. Holiday and weekend parking rates go into effect Good Friday in Emerald Isle and mid-May for Atlantic Beach.

The war is over, the south lost. Get over it! If you smoke anywhere you deserve what you get.

What y'all liberals don't understand is that if it weren't for the tax money that the state gets off tobacco, there wouldn't be enough money to keep these beaches maintained and running..Enough said

i have no problem with smoking on the beach, no health concerns over 2nd hand smoke etc. I almost ALWAYS have a problem with government invasion into our lives. However, that said, smokers: the beach is not your ashtray. if a ban would prevent my family from sitting in someones pile of smoked butts, then i am all for it. clean up your debris, you nasty mfers. you know who you are...

I agree. Those who stub out ciggy's in the sand, probably do worse in the water. Some people have class; some do not.

So rather than smokers having the freedom to do it outdoors, you would ban that? Well, consider beaches in California ban and fine; smoking on the beach, drinking on the beach, digging holes deeper than 18 inches, frisby throwing and ball throwing on the beach. People will chose what they chose out of choice to do so. By santioning government to take those freedoms away consider what they will take away from you as the new reality. Its called communism. The government makes the decisions for you since you are not capable of making them yourself. A comment I heard recently, was that running is dangerous and costly to healthcare based on heart attacks, joint replacement and other related conditions. Running....so are the going to ban that too since its unhealthy? So when the government decides you weigh too much they should step in and dictate your diet? Think about it...before its too late.

You said, "the government makes the decisions for you since you are not capable of making them yourself". That's communisms, but letting government make healthy decisions for women? You think that is just fine-well, women can ALSO make their own decisions!

To Snake, yes that is communism. Why is the government forcing us to pay for women abortive drugs and birth control.. Choice...its one of those freedoms. Seems the decision is not left to the woman, the gov did it already for them whether they used it or not. So is the government going to pay for viagera? anon on Mar 9, 2012 at 12:53 PM why that is the best to the point argument a liberal has made to me all day. The details, the links, the facts and truth.....you just represented liberals to the best example I have ever read...wow man, you got it going on. If I were I liberal, I can see how they would be proud of you for the exuberance.....what a libterd.

Who is going to pay for someone to pick up the butts left on the beach? Oh, that's right, you Republicans don't care if they go into the water along with the rest of the trash and chemicals you think are just fine to pour into our water!

I AM a smoker, but I realize that the open beaches belong to everybody and if it will keep them cleaner and more pleasant for others, I don't mind keeping my habit at home! You can call that communism-I call it democracy at work! I call it being considerate of others! I call it common sense!

Glad you asked the Viagra question! Viagra IS covered as a drug for a medical condition because it is "on the list" of medical drugs! You can claim all you want that is isn't, but you are wrong! The government isn't paying for any of this-this is a coverage by the insurance companies and they ALREADY include Viagra in their prescriptions! Birth control pills are not listed as "medical" even though they are used for many medical purposes-another "sexists" policy. This is exactly why bills have been submitted to require men to have a prostate exam to PROVE they need Viagra medically-but so far-those have been defeated! So, you and your GOP are against a woman's insurance covering birth control pills-even if her doctor says she has cysts, but you don't require men to prove ANYTHING to cover Viagra! Yes, the GOP is INDEED stripping women of their rights! You might have a claim that it is the insurance companies who are being unfair to call one "medical" and another not, but the GOP is backing that-against women!

you can cancel the story now, they voted 3to 2 not to ban smoking at Wrightsville Beach.
  • by High Road on Mar 9, 2012 at 06:00 AM
A pack a day smoker can easily spend a couple of thousand dollars a year on cigarettes. Many of these smokers claim they cannot afford health care so when their filthy habit catches up with them they rely of the government to pay their huge medical bills; additionally, insurance premiums are higher for the rest of us just to cover these deadbeats. Dying of smoking related emphysema or lung cancer is a miserable way to go; so smoke all you want but don't expect me to pay for it or tolerate your secondhand smoke or trashy butts.

Your taxes are higher too because of the food stamp program. They pile their buggies full of sugar. They cost you extra in FREE healthcare because of obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Stop trying to control everyone. Sit in your corner and behave. It's not YOUR place or our governments place to make us all the same like robots. Too much food, smoke, and drink will kill us all!! There is only one way out of here and we are all going to face it.

I agree with your comments about food stamps. They should cover healthy food options only. As for "Stop trying to control everyone. Sit in your corner and behave", isn't that a bit contradictory?

Just one more step towards complete control of out lives. Next they will try to ban beer because of the cans and bottles left behind. If they get away with that then soda cans/bottles will be next. Then fast food wrappers won't be allowed. Then of course they will ban grilling (no more left over coals or trash.) Guess families will have to go into a roped off section to have a picnic.

Its time to give smokers a break as for me I smoke will continue to smoke. I respect those who dont by asking first and dont if they dont. so respect my right to smoke. You need to concrentrate more on drugs that ruin FAMILYS AND KILL OUR CHILDREN, NOW THAT IS SOMETHING TO WORRY ABOUT.

Tobacco is a drug that causes health problems and kills others. If you wish to do that to yourself, that is your right. Just keep your cancerous smoke to yourself. I do not want it in my body or damaging the body and brains of my children. Also if you decide to continue poisoning your body, do not expect me to be willing to pay for your health care costs.

Let me be clear for you so once and for all you won't have to think those thoughts again, second hand smoke harms no one. Not you, not your children or even your dog. If you think real studies were drawn to prove it, let me correct you. I have been in the filter related industry all of my working life. The EPA said second hand smoke was dangerous regardless of a judge throwing their shoddy report out the window. It was merely political and never based on facts or studies. Now is it dangerous for smokers, yes, the real reports show it increases ones risk of many health problems. I just wanted to clear up that the lie that came from the EPA was used to remove smokers rights and now to control yours. I only buy into truth and facts and not politics for a lobby. So far it works to govern smokers, now it santions them for your weight and control of your childrens diet. Case in point in NC school lunch rooms, the food police now control what you give your kids. You inadvertently santioned that.

Why don't you do yourself a favor if you are so concerned about what goes into your body and the bodies of your children. You want to learn about cancer!! Start with the FDA educate yourself about the food you eat, and where it comes from and what they do to it before it gets to your local grocery store. "Pink Slime" Monsanto and all the chemicals it uses. I rather inhale SECOND hand smoke any day than I had to ingest the food that is labeled safe to eat. Research that, then get back to me. And ask yourself why doesn't Eastern NC have a GOOD grocery story to get our food besides, the pig, foodlion, harris teeter? No butchers...all our seafood comes for Brazil or Tialand. Think Woman

because smoking doesn't affect anyone but the end user right? While I agree there are far worse things out there, smoking in itself is still unsafe for anyone around it. Not to mention the price. I have personally seen families put food back at the register in order to buy cigarettes. If that isn't an example of negatively affecting families I don't know what is.
