UPDATE: Group, "Big Bird" Deliver Petition To UNC-TV Regarding Controversial Author

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Someone dressed as a yellow bird helped an advocacy group bring petitions to Senate leader Phil Berger's office, urging him to reconsider an author's appointment to North Carolina's public television governing board.

The person inside the costume made to suggest Sesame Street's "Big Bird" was turned away Monday by General Assembly police at the Legislative Building. But a leader of the liberal-leaning Progress North Carolina Action was allowed in to deliver what he called more than 19,000 petitions asking Berger to withdraw the appointment of Orson Scott Card to the University of North Carolina Television trustee board.

Card is a critic of same-sex marriage and has written an article calling President Barack Obama a dictator.

The legislature approved Card's appointment in July. Card said this month he supports public television.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A Greensboro author who is a critic of same-sex marriage and has written an article calling President Barack Obama a dictator has been named to the UNC-TV Board of Trustees.

The North Carolina Legislature approved Orson Scott Card's appointment to the board in July.

Card told The Associated Press that he supports public television and decided to join the UNC-TV board because it does great work for the people of North Carolina.

A news release from UNC-TV mentions Card's most famous books, "Ender's Game" and "Speaker for the Dead." It does not mention his column earlier this year saying Obama might train urban gangs to commit violence on his enemies.

Card says he hopes people will read his full essays and not rely on what he called deliberately distorted reports.
