Cold Snap Brings Stunned Turtles Ashore In NC

Temperatures in eastern North Carolina are warming up after a cold snap, but not soon enough for some sea turtles being found on beaches by concerned residents.

The StarNews of Wilmington reports that at least three loggerheads and 16 green turtles have been found on beaches along the southeast coast, mostly in the Cape Lookout area.

Twelve of the turtles died on Wednesday. Since reptiles can't control their body temperature, sudden drops in water temperature causes them to become lethargic and stop moving, in a reaction called cold-stunning.

Jean Beasley, director of the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Topsail Beach, says the turtles that haven't died yet may be able to recover.

Horrible posts, this is why I no longer come to to OBX for fishing or enjoyment. Because of you few people who think the ocean and beaches are there for them to destroy for everyone. Go sell it to the tackle shops who encourage your narrow minded behavoir. Thinking only of yourselves. Bad

Guess now the "turtle protectors" will sue and then lobby the state to put heaters up and down the beaches of the outer banks for the turtles to keep them warm, which would surely further restrict beach access by pedestrian or vehicle, thereby further KILLING the economy of the OBX! Nuf said!

I guess they will blame gillnets for slowing them from getting to warm water . The turtle people will have to start buying an airline ticket to South America . They will be wanting more money for little blankets for them .
