Boy Killed In Soccer Goal Accident

A 9-year-old boy was killed this weekend when a heavy, movable soccer goal fell on his head.

Published reports say Juan Escalera was hit by the metal goal after church Sunday Morning. The 3rd grader was in a field in Newton Grove in Sampson County, west of Mount Olive.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Reports say the goal was not secured to the ground, though it's not exactly clear why it fell over.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission says "these movable soccer goals pose an unnecessary risk of tipover to children who climb on goals (or nets) or hang from the crossbar."

The CPSC says they've had a number of similar deaths reported in the US. In a 20 year period, from 1979 to 1999, at least 23 people were killed by movable soccer goals. Even more were treated for injuries.
