A lot of people will be heading out on the water this holiday weekend and the Coast Guard auxiliary has started boating safety week.
Some of the common reminders include making sure your navigational equipment is all functioning, life jackets are plentiful and functioning, and of course the big note: don't drink and boat. If you can, experienced boaters say it's best to make sure someone who's landlocked knows you're heading out and when you'll be back.
"Just simply picking up the cell phone and calling aunt Lucy and saying: auntie listen, we're going out for 3 hours. I'll call you when we return. That's a float plan," said Coast Guard Captain Paul Del Rio.
According to the Coast Guard, in our state, there were 11 boating accidents last year. 2 resulted in deaths, 8 others had injuries.
