Blackwater Successor Settles Nisoor Square Lawsuit

The new owners of the security company formerly known as Blackwater are settling a lawsuit brought by some of the survivors and estates of Iraqis killed during an infamous 2007 shooting in Baghdad.

A spokesman for the company now called Academi said Saturday the settlement closes the last lawsuit against the company over the shooting that killed 17 Iraqis in Baghdad's Nisoor Square.

The security firm said the confidential settlement clears its slate and compensates the Iraqi families. Lawyers for the victims did not respond Saturday to messages seeking comment.

Blackwater had maintained that its guards shot in self-defense. The suit claims they were unprovoked. Other court cases connected to the shooting have been settled or been dismissed.

The lawsuit's settlement was first reported Saturday by The Charlotte Observer.

They should not have payed a dime.As it is we have given the Iraqi's too much in money and lives. They are still getting money from oil and will never pay us for the freedom that our soldiers gave them. The cost of the war should be theirs to bare not ours.
