NC Man Running Barefoot Across the State

A North Carolina man is taking on one incredible task. He is running across the state barefoot. And on Sunday WITN caught up with him as he ran through Greenville.

29 year old Matt Jenkins has been running for several days now and he says it’s all for a good cause.

He is going from the coastline of North Carolina, all the way to Tennessee. That means he will be running barefoot around 760 miles.

Jenkins works at an after school program for the Boone Western Youth Network. He says their funds were cut by more than $100,000 dollars this year, and now he’s running to raise money for the kids.

So why does he run barefoot? Well, Jenkins says that he runs barefoot because it helps with his leg problems, and it gives more attention to the charity.

Traditional running shoes atrophy the glutes. I dumped my Nikes for GistFiveToes. My Gists have brought my tone back, and I feel like I am connecting to the Earth when I run. After some more training, I am going to go completely barefoot. I tried others (Vibram & Five Fingers), but the zipper on the Gists makes them fit more snugly.

Great read -Born to Run- a story of long distance runners and the Tarahumara Tribe in the Copper Canyons of Mexico. It examines barefoot running and the re-emergence of barefoot running in this country. A recent study out of Harvard also advocates barefoot running as a technique which may help prevent some running related injuries. That said...RUN Forrest, RUN!
