New Highway Patrol Commander May Be Outsider

North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue will consider hiring someone from outside the Highway Patrol to be the troubled agency's new commander.

A state law requires the governor to appoint someone from within the ranks to take over the Highway Patrol, but a Perdue spokeswoman told The News & Observer of Raleigh that the governor will not restrict her search to in-house candidates.

Col. Randy Glover announced last week he is leaving as commander at the end of August after a series of scandals in the department tarnished the Highway Patrol's reputation.

Perdue might have trouble hiring someone from outside the patrol. Lawmakers went home earlier this month and she would have to call for a special session to bring them back before next year.

Why all this Trooper vs. Marine stuff? Everyone knows that the Navy is the toughest of 'em all. Heck, the Marines are part of the Navy anyway.

Police traditionally, should not be political in their work place. It should be neutral ground. The only elected one is Sherrif. The head of the NCSP should be promoted to that position. This is the same failure Obama had with McCrystal, he never listened to his own general, who he put in place. Now Bev causes the commander to resign over matters he cannot control. Whether you think this is going to solve the problem, it will lead only to a new set of problems, someone that not have a clue whats going on and playing learning curve...

Current law requires that person have completed patrol academy. How about a former trooper who finished the academy and at some point in his/her life went on to another agency? This person would meet the requirements. And as for the FEMALE MAJOR. I remember seeing her at Wendy's on 10th St and she was a LT less than 5 years ago. She sure jumped up in ranks fast. Bet she is a member of the good ole boy's club too.

Hopefully it will be someone good coming in. I don't like the way that Bev is going to try to have the law changed to where she can get in WHO SHE WANTS in. Politics at it's prime right there!

If she really wants to change the HP image, an outsider will definitely do that. Not necessarily in a good way, I'd bet. HP doesn't need a change. They just need someone to reign in the few bad apples and get the media off their backs. All of this would have died down already if the media would let it.

Companies hire executives and managers from outside all the time. Why should the patrol be any different as long a the person has the backround and qualifications?

@James...Man please. Do you think you can sit an NC Trooper in the middle of Iraq and they been trained to survive. Dont get me wrong troopers training are intense but at no ways compared to marines training.

I am a former Marine and presently a NC Trooper. As someone who has ACTUALLY been to basic training and patrol school, I can tell you they are BOTH tough in their own ways. No one can beat the mental aspect (and head games) of the Marine Corps. The phyiscal aspect of Patrol School was harder than anything I've ever done. I love both the Marine Corps and the Patrol. Please don't make comments on something you don't understand or never experienced. Like I tell my what you say because someone who really knows might be listening and will make you look stupid! ALSO..."Tony" that's about the most intelligent post I've seen on here in days! Thank you and I can't agree with you more!

to me somewhere in ENC...obviously you didnt read what Me in Greenville stated, you're obviously at ex inmate and by the way ask any trooper whose training is harder, not only that ask any marine when they can sit in an air conditioned car all day. NC Troopers shouldnt even be mentioned in the same sentence of a Marine. Go check in with your probation officer.
