Barefoot Marathon In NC

A long-distance runner who doesn't wear shoes is trying to run across North Carolina to draw attention to state budget cuts.

The Winston-Salem Journal reported 29-year-old Matt Jenkins planned to leave Manteo on Wednesday for a 760-mile journey ending in the mountains. Jenkins estimates he'll run about 30 miles a day over four weeks.

Jenkins works at an after-school program for the Western Youth Network in Boone that provides mentoring and summer programs. He decided the run could raise awareness about spending cuts to programs for young people.

Jenkins says after years of running barefoot he can handle hot pavement and pebbles. But he'll take a break if he comes across any freshly laid asphalt.

On my way to Manteo I passed this runner in Manns Harbor. On my return trip home he was taking a break on Stumpy Point Road. Later in the evening, as I drove to Engelhard, he was in front of East Carolina Bank. He had surpassed his 30mi/day by going 48 miles his first day. I must say, a very committed man. Concerned with him staying out in the bad weather, he was told about the Engelhard Hotel that might welcome him with open arms. We are all concerned with the State Budget Cuts, but apparently not as committed as the Barefoot Runner.

What a great argument against cutting the budget. (Or is it a great argument FOR cutting the budget??)
