Internet Sweepstakes Cafe Owners Upset Over Expected Ban

Gamers and operators of internet sweepstakes cafes say they're upset the legislature is one step closer to banning them.

The state legislature believes buying time to play casino games at internet sweepstakes cafes is nothing more than gambling and has taken one more step to put them out of business.

In Greenville there are about a dozen of these internet cafes set up in old store fronts and strip malls. The scene is similar all across the state. Cafe operators say the ban would eliminate thousands of jobs during the bad economy by getting rid of this form of entertainment.

Lawmakers said Thursday night the 2006 video poker ban also applies to computer-based sweepstakes games.

If the governor signs the bill into law that means these businesses will have to shut down by December 1st.

What most people that oppose this are missing is this..above the fact that its my money to with what I want..there is nothing forcing anyone to enter these types of establishments. Can't win or lose if you don't go in!! That's my choice..not some politician! Time to close all the bars..stop selling cigarettes too... I not sure I can keep from smoking myself to death at the local pub without a law to stop me!!

i work in one of these sweepstakes and i agree people do throw away cash like no bodys business, but that is their choice. i need this job to pay for my familys food, medical bills, and my rent. jobs are hard enough to find as it is, lets not put those families who work at these companies in more financial trouble adding to our countries unemployment percentile and debt for that matter.

Why aren't the bingo businesses being shut down? That's gambling also. You're paying money for a chance to win.

It's funny how a few people can go in and decide on everyones lives. They tell people how to spend their money and put many out of a job. Did anyone ever think of how many people would go back to welfare if out of a job. Maybe no one else will say it but I will. Come December I will be standing in line for a check that The People will have to just give me. I earn my own way and support my family by working in an Internet Sweepstakes Cafe. I see people in and out that are upset and outraged that someone else is trying to tell them how to spend the money THEY earned!!!...Do you not realize they will go out of state or on a boat because THEY GROWN & THEY WANT TO. I feel whats good for one is good for all so take the lottery and bingo and ban it. Why not?...Same thing. Only difference is we don't lie to people. Where is the funds from the NC Education Lottery? I know myself I have brought many tickets and our schools have not been helped yet.

Good to see our state goverment putting a stop to this. All the mental midgets throwing their money away at these places need to be protected from theirselves. If they aren't going to use the money to pay bills or save for some worthy goal such as a college fund for their children or retirement they should donate it to a charity or church.

Burger King is starting a new game, they need to stop that from taking place in NC also. What is fair for one business is fair for all. No games of chance at any business, church or charity. If they are going to stop one business from having games they need to stop them all or leave them all alone. And then there is the scam they call "education" lottery.....

It is our money to do what we want to with it. I thought this was a free country. It is wrong to do away with it. It is relaxing after a hard days work. Are they mad because the government doesn't have a part in it, if so let them get a small share of it. Is it because of the lottery. I buy tickets everyday and they suck! Let us do what we want to with our money. Leave us alone Perdue.

There's no sign on the doors at the Sweepstakes Cafe' stating that you have to bring your whole paycheck. The people who go and play spend what they want to spend. Nobody's making them spend their bill money. Even though people play to win it may be leisure time for others.

The owners know they have been getting over. There are no real winners in these establishments. The people are low to moderate income and they are loosing their entire paycheck. Yes, I know the lottery is also gambling and no it doesn't live up to its hype, but I have yet to know someone who spends their entire weekly check on lottery numbers.
