NC Legislature Passes Ban On Internet Sweepstakes

The North Carolina Legislature has made clear its 2006 video poker ban also applies to computer-based sweepstakes games that have popped up inside old store fronts and strip malls statewide.

The House agreed Wednesday by a vote of 86-27 to back a Senate bill approved last month that would do away with the games which have become popular at hundreds of Internet cafes and business centers.

The measure now goes to Gov. Beverly Perdue's desk for her signature. If she approves, it would become law Dec. 1.

Center operators say the ban would eliminate thousands of jobs during the bad economy by getting rid of a game that's a form of entertainment, not gambling.

But machine opponents argue the games are designed to get around the 2006 video poker ban.

Why not ban every stupid thing people do with their money. Fishing license- against the law unless you catch fish. Baseball game illegal unless your team wins. Come on! I wish our government officials would quit wasting their time "banning" things and spend more time focusing on the laws we have already. Make what we have work folks- and go to banning things when your done.

Have you ever been in a sweepstakes cafe? You act like it is the poorest of the poor in there? Have you ever walked in BINGO or waked in TRADE MART on a Wednesday before tey draw for the BIG LOTTERY TICKET Wednesday night? Its the same thing stupid! Who are you to tell anyone how to spend there own money wether it be earned or given to them...they are going to get it given to them regardless of how they spend it...you need to be educated on what these places are before you make stupid comments on them...How about the 1000's of people that are now going to lose there jobs and have to get money handed to them again? You going to make a comment about how they dont have a job and need to stop holding there hand out? Its ignorance that makes people stupid and you sound full of it...

Hey its not really about the poor getting poorer, they will always be poor. They strive for nothing! And really are just too stupid to know any better! But I am glad to get rid of these places they look so trashy! And Dorthy if you think ENC is boring, why are you here, honestly..cause you are to poor to leave.you spent all you money on video poker perhaps. Ahhh the hard truth. Who really wants to look at all these section *8's spending their welfare checks then hold their hand out for more? They already pay like $12.00 a month for rent and get their electric, healthcare, food for free, now we must supply them with gambling money aswell. This is Obama Nation! Wow

Well at least the government checks aren't going to this cause any longer!!! Those of you that make a decent living and want to blow your money, yes it is your business, so go to Vegas or play Bingo. However, most of these saps are using your hard earned money when you pay those incredibly high taxes so you can support the low life's that don't want to work and get a Government check every month...so let them get a job and quit whinning.

dorothy has it right. There is nothing to do around here. Where do we go to have fun. Usually to Virginia, the beach, or the mountains. I'm ready to get out of this God forsaken state and move back to Texas or somewhere out west.

This place is already boring. This was a way to relieve stress and meet friends. It is terrible how N.C. is so boring. This is one reason why young people get in so much trouble...not enough activities here..Are these elderly people making all the decisions

December 1st. gives these vendors enough time to "recreate" themselves. Abolish it now. Just tonight,as I passed through Williamston, I saw so many people in the parking lots of these establishments. It is a shame. True some people win,but the amount of money being loss is incredibel. With the lottery, people are not spending their entire paycheck, but they are doing this in those illegal sweepstakes galleries. I wonder how they were able to "fool" so many local commissioner. Oh that's right, no one could prove they were really gambling. Give me a break!
