Legislative leaders made progress this week on moving ethics and government reform bills through the General Assembly. Their biggest work will come as the current session winds down.
The House gave tentative approval late Thursday to a wide-ranging measure that would limit state contractors in donating to the political campaign of someone seeking a Council of State office. It also requires board and commission members to disclose their detailed fundraising activities for the officials appointing them.
A Senate judiciary committee also recommended its own reform bill Thursday that leaves out some House provisions and studies another.
The two sides likely will negotiate a compromise since legislative leaders and Gov. Beverly Perdue say it's critical to get a package passed before the General Assembly adjourns.
