Tanning salons in Eastern Carolina and across the country were hit Thursday by a new federal tax on tanning beds.
Businesses providing ultraviolet tanning services must collect the 10 percent excise tax at the time the customer pays for services. If the customer fails to pay the excise tax, the tanning service provider is liable for the tax.
Federal lawmakers created the excise tax to help pay for President Barack Obama's health care reform.
The tax does not include spray on tanning and is not included in membership fees.
