Tax For Tanning

Tanning salons in Eastern Carolina and across the country were hit Thursday by a new federal tax on tanning beds.

Businesses providing ultraviolet tanning services must collect the 10 percent excise tax at the time the customer pays for services. If the customer fails to pay the excise tax, the tanning service provider is liable for the tax.

Federal lawmakers created the excise tax to help pay for President Barack Obama's health care reform.

The tax does not include spray on tanning and is not included in membership fees.

Ok I have read some of the comments and I have to say if Tanning Beds, Smoking, and Alcohol are "health care problems" what about all these kids born to ppl who don't pay a dime for them all their life! But get a check and go get hair and nails done and have the latest new cell phones. SO if i really look at this pic, I pay taxes to tan, smoke, drink, have a kid i've never seen, and have $$ taken out of my check each month so someone else can get hair and nails and a new cell phone. Oh and I forgot 22" rims and speakers!!! Wait!!! Maybe I should just go to the tanning bed and get a little darker!!!!

Anon, you can get skin cancer by tanning in the sun too. Reading a book isn't good SPF. The fact is you have to be predisposed in the first place... but it is called SPF for a reason. That's SUN protection factor. That's the first and foremost concern. I haven't seen a TBPF product.

OutsideLookingIn Location: ENC on Jul 2, 2010 at 01:11 PM, thats a good point and sorry I left it out. Tax on heels too. Tax on Jim in Grifton for saying taxes are patriotic. Moving his lips causes an expensive repair if his jaw joints become unaligned. This caused his jaw to be wired shut and causes taxpayers to pay more money. Of course there is metacarpal from typing....TAXES ARE WHAT AMERICA FOUGHT AGAINST, in case you forgot. Thats OK, they will go after you drugs soon....I really would be Ok with the koolaid tax though, plenty of you drinking it could pay off Obakas debt he created...tax on high heels, made my night!!! Happy fourth folks! Never forget where we came from and who we are.....OSOC

Haha, I think it's funny. You should see all the orange colored girls at ECU. They look stupid. Even though there is a tax on this, it isn't going to stop people from using tanning beds. So when they get skin cancer down the road, it's the own stupid fault. Go outside and tan and read a book. I still think the tax is funny. Don't worry, Obama will find another reason to tax us Americans. He ain't done yet; he's just starting.

i sure hope you're not insinuating that laying in a tanning bed is illegal or are you 'just saying'? I'm not sure I follow you here. Tanning salons are being taxed, not outlawed.

Just to entertain some of you, how about a tax on shoes sporting a heel higher than 1/4 inch? It's also proven that women who spend a high (no pun intended) percentage of their walking and standing time in high heeled shoes during a lifetime suffer more foot problems like bunions and heel spurs. I really do not think the tanning tax was intended as racial profiling of white people (who dislike being white so much they wish to be browner), but as a type of luxery tax as tanning is not necessary for daily existance. Oh, let's keep going; a tax on people who commit crime. A criminal's tax bracket should be increased 5% for each crime they commit or law broken; how do you like that one? Again, this is just to entertain some of you.

Well, I guess people will now just buy them and go over to each others houses to tan. When taxes get to be too high for anything, it leads to underground activity and illegal behaviors. If people want things, there are those people who will provide it!

B, I never thought about that, however, you are right. Isn't that government racial profiling? It does go both ways. I guess with Watermellon season coming about, too much water can kill you...I guess they better put a big tax on that. Ooops, forgot Silver Queen Corn....new tax for that....Nanny will take care of everybody....Pork tax....high blood pressure and the list........goes on and on like that bunny with the drum...
