Travel On I-95? Pay Up If You Want To Get Into VA From NC

The McDonnell administration wants to establish tolls on Interstate 95 near the North Carolina border.

The Virginia Department of Transportation estimates the tolls could generate $30 million to $60 million annually, based on user fees of $1 to $2 an axle.

The money generated by those tolls would be used to make safety improvements along the interstate.

Virginia officials say significant stretches of I-95 are in need of improvements and have some of the state's highest accident rates.

Gov. Bob McDonnell said Monday the state has submitted an application to the Federal Highway Administration to establish the tolls.

If other states are charging toll fees for interstates, I'm all for us returning the favor!!

fyi, Virginia really ought to make some of their local roads toll roads like the ones around Richmond; if road quality is the real issue...I thought for years Virginia roads were better until I actually had to DRIVE regularly on something other than an interstate...just saying...

I for one, born and raised here, believe that NC should have toll booths at all the interstates in NC. 95, 85, 40 & 26. Our roads needs improvements and let the people that travel them help pay for them. Those snow birds fleeing the north for the warmer climate should pay their fair share on our interstates. The revenue from these can also assist with other road projects. I'm all for a toll.

To Alli from Kinston @ 06:34pm: Please do all of us a favor and leave NC and never return like you said you want to. And since when is "thug" a racist remark? You must have some in your family and are trying to turn one persons opinion into something that it was not. And we don't care how you lived up north; if you liked so well up there, why did you bother to come way down south. PLEASE take your yankee hindparts somewhere else.

I winder if all the people who are complaining even travel to VA or points north. Those of us who are from the north are used to tolls and they are no big deal.It seems that the people here have to complain about something or they are not happy. Calm down, most people waste $4.00 a day. To the poster who made the "thug" remark, maybe you should be tolled for making cruel and racist remarks. People like you make me want to pay the toll out of NC and never return.

You all must not drive I-95 much or you'd remember they just took out the toll booths (located near Petersburg, VA) not too many years ago. It was a total nightmare getting through that thing traveling during a holiday. It was fantastic when they took them out! I-95 through Virginia has always been good road so it looks like they've been able to maintain it without a toll booth.

To Terry: I'm not the Gov and not from VA, and I'm certainly not made over something this stupid! You are free to go where you please and say what you wish, that even includes the childish rants you've made. Get a life!

North Carolina needs to set one up for the people going from VA to NC. We need the money also to repair our roads.

doesn't VA get enough money for there highway by pulling everyone going 5 miles over the speed limit? And if they start this thing at a dollar in 10 years im sure it will be pushing $5 Why do citizens keep voting in these idiots who want to keep pushing taxes up and up?

I agree with the toll, only if the money goes towards road maintaince or balancing the budget, whatever would benefit the people, but I gurantee somebody will mess it up and pocket some of the cash, but a lot people that are against, paying $1.00 or two is not the end of the world, my wife and I drove to Ft. Lauderdale, and that Turnpike will break you, we paid $13.00 at one toll, and we went through at least 7 o tolls.
