Cherry Hospital Charged With Patient Violations

North Carolina health officials say a mental hospital in Goldsboro has been cited for mistreating a patient.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that staff members at Cherry Hospital were videotaped dragging a man by his arms onto a bed and then holding a pillow over his face briefly.

Regulators say the hospital was cited with an "immediate jeopardy" violation last week for failing to investigate the April 7 mistreatment of the 22-year-old man with mood and perception problems.

State Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Lanier Cansler outlined the situation to a legislative committee Thursday.

Cansler said the patient was trying to spit on the staff members. Cansler says the video shows the staff needs additional training in how to properly restrain violent patients.

Bill is absolutely right. I worked in healthcare for years, and I saw basically the same attitudes and behaviors. Until you work in a dialysis unit, ER, Drug Center, you do not know how those people act. I would venture a wage on how many patients at Cherry were put there for drug problems.

If the people are that VIOLENT, should they not be keep very sedated and in lockdown isolation like any common criminal. Prisions seem to know how to deal with them, why is it Cherry cannot. Maybe they could get some tips from the state prision system.

Cherry Hospital is sort of like those railroad crossing with out gates, a certian number of people have to be killed before something is done about it. Seems like the government will be happy writing citations until a certian number of people are killed.

we need to see the video b4 we judge. "They pulled the patient by the arms"- how would some of you restrain a violent psychotic patient? You cant do it telekinetically you have to actually grab the person and physically do it- it isnt always pretty. As for the pillow it may well be they never put the pillow over the face that would be dumb dumb dumb plus they know they are on camera they probably held it between them and the spitting patient to protect them. Some patients have hepatitis hiv etc and will bite their own tongues to get the blood flowing then spit on you to try to pass the virus. What would be great is if the administrators and surveyors came and picked a staff and told them to fight like a patient and show us just how they would do it better, I would volunteer to be the patient. Remember I could bite head butt pull hair out, spit blood, kick , hit , choke, eye gouge etc but the staff cannot do anything or they will be fired

The problem is.... in an effort to save the 'almighty dollar'... Cherry and other places hire people who have no business in this field. But, when you offer someone 9 dollars an hour..... you'll get all kinds of uneducated, uncaring workers. Figures!
