Cherry Hospital Charged With Patient Violations

North Carolina health officials say a mental hospital in Goldsboro has been cited for mistreating a patient.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that staff members at Cherry Hospital were videotaped dragging a man by his arms onto a bed and then holding a pillow over his face briefly.

Regulators say the hospital was cited with an "immediate jeopardy" violation last week for failing to investigate the April 7 mistreatment of the 22-year-old man with mood and perception problems.

State Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Lanier Cansler outlined the situation to a legislative committee Thursday.

Cansler said the patient was trying to spit on the staff members. Cansler says the video shows the staff needs additional training in how to properly restrain violent patients.
