Fire Concerns From Pine Straw

Pine straw is a popular ground cover, but some say it can also be dangerous.

A Raleigh city council panel has approved restrictions on using pine straw for landscaping outside apartment complexes and townhomes because it can easily catch on fire.

While there are no restrictions locally, the Winterville Fire department agrees that it's sometimes dangerous.

Firefighters say they've gone on about ten to fifteen pine straw fire calls so far this year. In fact, they say a discarded cigarette caught some on fire behind the Winterville Town Hall on Saturday.

If you use pine straw by your home, firefighters have a few suggestions for you:
Like keeping it watered, keeping around your house kind of wet and damp, don't throw cigarettes and don't have a grill or anything out there where you have open flame close to it.

The full Raleigh city council must approve the restrictions before they can go into effect. The proposed ordinance prohibits using pine straw within ten feet of combustible structures, aside from single family homes and duplexes.

(haha) yes lord, if I just knowed then what I know now. . . I would have probably been able to have flowers around my house! My husband (he's gone now) believed the way he believed and after the fire accident with my flower beds he put a stop to it. He was good to us though, just no flowers. Smoking finally took him away 2 years ago.

(to wow) well you would be surprise as how many people don't have sense. We was youngun's ourselves during that time and no we cic'nt have the sense we should have. NOw that I am older I can see the side of not having pinestraw agaist the house. NO, I hated to see them nice flowers go but I always trusted my husbands sayings. We could have lost up our home but we never did. People should know the dangers at least.

well, it is true people. One time many years ago (before electric airconditioning) my husband threw out a cigarette through the open window of our bedroom. I had a beautiful flower bed outside our window decarated with pinestraw. Well during the nighttime, we awoken to smoke coming threw the window and flames all outside. It could have been worser but my beautiful flower bed was ruint. after that night my husband racked all the straw from the flower beds and even went as far as to pull up all my plants. he never again alloud plants or any trees around the house ever again. Lesson learned. So, this can cause problems, it did for us.
