Town of Kure Beach Bans Thongs

A town council in North Carolina has banned thongs, with the mayor saying he wants to keep the area as close to "Mayberry with a beach" as possible.

The Star-News of Wilmington reported that the town council in Kure Beach voted Thursday to ban the swimwear. The move came after the police chief received an e-mail earlier in the week asking if the town's existing nude bathing ordinance allowed thongs.

The ordinance bans nudity or "insufficient clothing," and the man wanted to know if thongs were allowed for both men and women.

Mayor Dean Lambeth says the town clerk flagged the e-mail after learning the question was connected to a photographer who takes inappropriate photographs.

It's about time someone stands up for morals and decency. I'm like most other men-I like to look at a beautiful woman in a bathing suit. But most of the time the ones wearing thongs don't need to be. I think pushes the line on public nudity and we as Americans need to return to some of the values that this country was built on. Stop crying that your rights are being violated. If we didn't set rules and guidelines somewhere, where would our country be now. Way to go Kure Beach. I always go to the Outer Banks in Nags Head and area. Maybe I'll get the chance to visit your beach this Summer.

As the mother of 2 young kids, I'm all for a law such as this. I think it's disrespectful & inappropriate for anyone to bare their goods in the presence of kids. Keep that in the strip clubs & nude beaches.

Well I think it is great they did it and it should be a federal law for the whole US that no thongs are allowed on beaches as well as no wet t-shirt contests be allowed which doesn't do anything for women, just men gaulking when the ladies take their tops off or pull them up...the world has gone crazy with too much exposure and it's time someone put an end to it at the beaches and on TV before GOD decides to! Thanks Kure Beach...I think thongs should be in thong type private swimming pools only or in the privacy of your own home! Then, too, the US Feds need to ban "strip clubs too" Most of them are just whore houses for prevered old men!

This ban on the wearing of thong swimsuits is the real face of tyranny in America. The abuse of power by social conservatives and town boards to limit the freedoms of individual citizens to free expression and the use of their own bodies. There is no valid reason to institute such a ban. No harm is done in wearing a thong swimsuit. This is pure imposition of social conservative feelings of morality on the entire population of the United States. This is the face of tyranny.

What's next Kure Beach, banning bikinis or better yet how about banning thong underwear?! You guys must be a bunch of backward southern Baptist. Last time I checked we were living in the 21st cent. not the 1600's.

If its any consolation to the conservatives out there, consider this; the only people who 'display their wares' in public are people who truly think they have some 'valuable junk in the trunk'!! Haha! In other words, they want folks to 'check out their junk.' Now, looking the other way...

Once again, self righteous, bible thumping conservatives dictate law for all.

First, I am unsure as to wether to agree/disagree with this law. If the council is willing ban thongs on the bech; then they should also ban: bikini, speedo, anything that reveals:butt, crotch, or breast areas. Also, these laws should go for both men and women. Because only applying the law to one sex, is called being sexist and Unconstitutional,14th Amendment. My question is how is town of Kure Beach going to enfroce this law?
