About one week after Washington's new bypass opened in Beaufort County, officials sat down to talk about the future of Highway 17.
The Highway 17 Association held its annual meeting in New Bern Tuesday afternoon. The main topic of conversation---getting Highway 17 fully improved from Virginia to South Carolina, which means making it all four lanes.
Marc Finlayson is with the Highway 17 Association. "It's going to improve safety for the citizens who improve the road, it's going to increase mobility, which will help attract industry that needs access to a four lane road, it's going to increase tourism for people who want to get to some of the wonderful attractions in the corridor, help our military grow, it's going to help our ports meet their needs moving goods in and out, a lot of good reasons to improve 17, we're working hard on it."
Association members predict at least another couple of decades before Highway 17 is all four lanes and that's if funding continues to flow for transportation projects in North Carolina.
