Sweepstakes Smackdown

The Rocky Mount city council voted unanimously Monday to zoning restrictions for the gaming parlors. That's according to the Rocky Mount Telegram.

The paper says new Internet cafes will not be allowed to open within 500 feet of schools, parks, churches, child care centers, adult establishments, residential neighborhoods or other sweepstakes gaming parlors.

Some city leaders want to restrict the cafes more, by enacting tougher age requirements and hours of operation.

These places are high tech gambling houses - nothing more. They should all be shut down!

Doesn't Rocky Mt. have more pressing concerns than this? Like crime or unemployment. People will find a way to play if they want to...like out of their home (poker and numbers. I just think that regulating these establishments is a waster of taxpayer dollars. Please use the money for bringing industry back.

To Neo: "second oldest passtime"...hmmm since the bible mentions that the first occupation was farming, I wonder what the oldest passtime is?

They need to put the smackdown on the robbers, gang members, shooters, and other criminals instead of this. Guess that Rocky Mount wants to help out those Nash County lawyers a little too much!

Gambling is the world's second oldest passtime. People are going to gamble somewhere, some way, no matter what. If someone wants to lose their money gambling it is their own business. The only thing more stupid than gambling your money away is trying to make it illegal for an idiot to do it if they want to. Why don't you meddlesome people tend to your own business and stop trying to save those who don't feel they need saving from something they don't see as a problem.
