Plane Lands On Hilton Head Beach Killing Beachgoer

A Hilton Head Island fire and rescue spokeswoman says the single-engine plane started leaking oil at about 13,000 feet and was trying to land at the local airport. Joheida Fister says the oil blocked the pilot's vision and he tried to land on the beach at Palmetto Dunes late Monday afternoon.

She says the pilot reported that the propeller came off the plane. She says the plane hit the man and came to rest a little farther down the beach.
The names of the man killed, pilot and passenger were not released. The plane was an Experimental Lancair IV-P.

Fister says federal transportation officials are investigating.

To Anonymous on Mar 16, 2010 at 12:40 PM & B. Why in the heck did you have to go racial on this story? It's about a plane killing a man on the beach? Some of you out there are still living in the 1800's. Time to get up with the 2010 year. Get over yourself. A southern person wouldn't like it if I called them "rebel", so why do you think it's ok to call a northern "Yankee"? Some of you just don't get it. You are VERY racial people. You only hear this down in the redneck areas, so I'd think that Anonymous & B are rednecks for sure. Sometimes I'm ashamed to say I'm from the south with people like you two.

If you were driving down the highway and your car suddenly cut off and you pulled off and ran over someone on the shoulder, you would at least be facing manslaughter charges. Now why didn't he ditch the plane in the shallow edge of the water where no one was? That would have been the logical thing to do.Looks like in the photo it ended up there anyway. At least if he was wealthy enough to be flying around in a plane, then he should share some of that wealth with this man's family to help ease their loss.I'm sure their attorney will feel that way also.

Terrible sad situation! May God be with the friends and family of this man and with the ones on the airplane. This was a freak accident and nobody should get charged. I hope nothing like this ever happens again.
