Police Say Man Shot After Turning Gun On Officers

North Carolina officials say a three-hour standoff with a man family members called suicidal ended when the man pointed his gun at police and was killed.

Police Chief Tim Bellamy told the News & Record of Greensboro that as many as five officers shot 25-year-old Shawn Lee Gordon on Friday. No one else was injured.

The officers have been placed on administrative leave and the shooting will be investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation.

Gordon's brother Grady Peeden called police after Gordon said he was going to kill himself. Peeden said his brother had been depressed and couldn't afford treatment without health insurance.

Peeden said his family tried to get Gordon to give up his gun by telling him he would be taken to a mental hospital.

I have always been a beleiver of having a right to hold a firearm, but for someone like this, he sure did'nt deserve to have a gun and if he was still living, it should be a felony for him to possess a gun. It's unfortunate that this happened and my thoughts and prayers go out to the officers and the families of everyone involved.

Pete-I do get it. In this case, an innocent bystander was NOT hit. Would you prefer that the officers themselves had gotten shot? I will say it again; If you think you know how the police should do their jobs, become an officer yourself and show them how it's done. Otherwise...your opinions in matters such as these count for nothing.

It's unfortunate that this happened, but the officers were well within their rights. I doubt they feel good about the outcome, but each went home unharmed.

I'm with Jimmy on this one. Good Job GPD! The family shouldn't have threatened him with the mental institution. THAT is enough to make you wanna turn the gun on yourself.

Rich and Pete: How much more justification do you need than having a guy pointing a gun at the officers? What were they supposed to use to defend themselves, harsh language maybe? I wish that the legions of police critics like yourselves would try doing that job. You have the guts to stand safely on the sidelines and criticize, but you'll never put on the uniform, badge, and gun and actually PROVE you know what you're talking about...because you don't.

THAT's the kind of gun control we need. right in the ten ring.

I agree, 5 police was a bit excessive but, the use of deadly force was still justified. If someone is turning a gun on me, I'm gonna empty the whole clip...a 2nd clip would be to many and 9 would be to few.
