Cause In Explosion That Killed Six, Injured Local Man

Federal safety investigators have released the cause of an explosion that killed six people and injured a man from Holly Ridge.

Investigators say enough natural gas to fill a professional basketball arena was vented into tight quarters shortly before an explosion at the Kleen Energy Systems plant in Connecticut early this month.

Onslow County resident Paul Gaskins was in the plant at the time and survived.

Investigators say a 'gas blow' which cleans the pipes put 400,000 cubic feet of gas into an area close to the plant's power block, and near many ignition sources.

Gaskins, who suffered head and neck injuries, is back at home recovering.
