Haiti Donations Deductible For 2009

To encourage donations to Haiti a new law was passed so you can claim a deduction on your 2009 taxes.

President Obama signed H.R. Bill 4462 into law.

The new law says in order to write off a Haiti donation for 2009 it needs to be made before March 1st----if not it can be deducted on 2010 tax returns. The law also allows taxpayers to use telephone bills as proof of donations made via a text message.

Greenville accountant Christopher McLawhorn says if you do your own taxes, it will most likely be pretty easy to figure out. "I'm sure the software will have a special question for it, most software stays up to date, probably just a special question you just have to keep record of what you donate and answer it correctly."

A similar bill was passed back when Hurricane Katrina hit.

What kind of steaming pile has the Congress come up with now. This is the biggest waste of Congressional time. What makes Haiti so special that donations from the next year can be put on the previous years taxes.I hope they do this for the next natural disaster suffered by an area of OUR country.
